In case anyone was interested to know, the Dumbbell front raise exercise sucks!. Biomechanically this so called shoulder exercise will cause impingement of the bicep tendon and high shearing forces on the joint capsule.  For the lay person this means that you will cause yourself permanent damage to the bicep tendon and the capsule that supports the shoulder joint. Try a dumbell scaption instead, safe, effective and functional all at the same time.

Do as I do

If you go to a function and happen to sit next to a dietitian and you just happen to be vaguely interested in nutrition you will most likely watch them eat.  You would observe their eating habits, portion sizes and food choices.  Now, lets say you are in the gym and just happen to be exercising next to a personal trainer and both of you just happen to be doing the exact same exercise.  I sure hope you would notice their technique, observe their pace, rest periods and form.  Why would anyone ignore or just not ask why or what is the best way or simply how?.

How To Destroy your Body

PLEASE, prior to beginning an exercise program, or if you have been training for guite some time seek out a QUALIFIED fitness professional.  I still can’t believe all the trainers that are literally killing their clients bodies with dangerous ineffective exercises and how many gym rats do the same to themselves.  The most dangerous thing is not knowing that you do not know.  The list of exercises that are dangerous and painful is lengthy, and the equipment in most facilities forces you to move in planes that will damage you.  PLEASE educate yourself or find a fitness professional that is.

YOU LOST

Today I saw the most amazing think in the gym.  A ‘big guy’ (he must know what he is doing) was working out with  one of the pretty people and the token fat guy.  The ‘big guy’ made a huge production out of showing/demonstrating all the great chest exercises. I was amazed at how many people were watching them, i guess trying yo get some free information or training tips.  Too bad almost every exercise the ‘big guy’ was demonstrating was horrible for the shoulder.  The ‘big guy’ even demonstrated on himself all of the dangerous exercises, and look at how big and strong he is.  Funny thing is that all the exercises were laying flat on their backs, if you are laying flat on your back in the game of life or sports for that matter, YOU LOST.  Please stop following others in the gym, what they know is wrong and usually ineffective and dangerous.

Do you know what you don’t know? (Spine)

Do you know if you are hurting your spine / back by exercising?.  The back extension machine, which you will find in any gym, will actually damage your back.  We are not designed to bear load on our body with our hips and legs fixed.  That would be like building a house on a hill with no foundation and expecting gravity and the wind to not pull it down hill.  This puts tremendous amounts of strain on the spine which will greatly increase your chances of injury.

You only have one Body

You are only given one body, how you choose to live your life is yopur choice.  Unfortunately by the time most folks realize they have abused their body to the point of breaking it’s too late.  Wellness is a great concept that if employed early and used consistently will leavr you with a healthy, fit, disease free and well feeling structure.  Wellness must be adhered to daily, I’m not saying no beer or ice cream, just limit it and counter the negative effects of whatever you do. Nutrition is huge, whole food’s, exercise, sleep, hydration, stress control……

The Worlds Best Exercise

If I had to choose the ‘worlds best exercise’ that got it all, which is a question asked a lot, what would it be.  A full body exercise, definately.  A multi-joint exercise, yes.  An exercise that involves balance, sure.  One that forces all the joints in the body and all the muscles to stabilize, absolutely.  So what is the best exercise in the world, well the obvoius answer is to just exercise every day.  But the answer is………. SQUAT.  Now, the difficult part is how to do a proper squat to acchieve all of the above goals.  www.fitnessprogramsplus.com

IF YOU HAVE TO DROP IT, IT’S TO HEAVY

If you have to drop the weights (machine, dumbbells etc) they must be too heavy!  I can not stand ‘those guys’ that must slam the weights with each and every exercise they do.  my theory is they make a lot of noise to compensate for shortcomings elsewhere.  Seriously, control the weights at all times, if you have to drop it it is too heavy.

Doctor does wrong

spine-post-view.jpgAs someone who is obsessed with always exercising with the utmost perfection ensuring safety and consistency I am amazed at what I saw.  A doctor,(chiropractor) who judging by his bulging arms must know how to exercise, doing one of the most dangerous exercises for the shoulder.  Not only was he doing this exercise but he did it on a machine which exponentially increases the BAD forces placed on the joint.  I find it ironic that this doctor runs a “pain and rehabilitation clinic”.  Just goes to show you that even those who are supposed to know do not know.  But, he has big arms so I guess that makes him knowledgeable on exercise.

Practice what you Preech

waist-measurement.jpgDoes your physician exercise, are they overweight, do they eat well.  We sort of expect this from a doctor, so why not a Personal Trainer.  Go to most local ‘chain’ gyms and watch the “fitness” staff.  Do they work out, are they eating fast food, consuming energy drinks all day?  If your trainer can not be accountable to themselves and have respect for their own body how much are they going to put toward your health.  Exercise is important but wellness is all encompassing.  Looking good and feeling bad is no way to go through life.  Health includes diet, nutrition, stress, sleep, chemical exposure, hydration……  Visit www.fitnessprogramsplus.com for some great wellness articles.
